Happy birthday, Dad!

“Out of My Way” is another song with lyrics written by Tang Tian (just like “As Wished,” “Flowers Bloom, Forget Your Worries,” and “A Lifelong Journey.”) It is the ending theme song for the Chinese drama “Joy of Life 2”. Although I have not watched the TV show, I think this song was written for you—a tribute to you and all those who stick to their ideals regardless of what the rest of the world thinks.

When I was little, you introduced me to the English vocabulary “grit.” Back then, I was young and naive, and besides its literal meaning of “perseverance,” I did not understand what it truly entails. It wasn’t until I grew up and struggled alone in a foreign country for over a decade that I realized “grit” is, in fact, the central theme of your life. From your days in school to your entrepreneurial endeavors, you have been constantly chasing the moon in your heart: while most people chose stable jobs and life paths, you always chose the road less traveled. To others, giving up stability and embracing the unknown might seem “reckless” or “different,” but for you, it was a dream, a core belief, a lifelong pursuit. You showed me through your actions and unwavering dedication that it is okay to be different, because the moon in your heart called “dream” is worth chasing for a lifetime. As I grow older, I realize that I am gradually becoming you.

As the wiseman said, every heart has flaws.
Being unfazed isn't about being fearless, it's about being willing to bear the consequences.
After weighing the pros and cons, I chose to uphold integrity.
Thank you for your advice, but please be out of my way.

I really like this part of the lyrics, as it is a precise footnote to your entrepreneurial journey: you are aware of your flaws, but they never stopped you from moving forward; you are unfazed because you are determined to manage risk and bear the consequences; most importantly, you know where the shortcuts are, but between “easy” and “integrity,” you always choose the latter. Whenever I encounter difficult choices in the workplace, I always take you as my role model, reminding myself to uphold my boundaries. Finally, you are never afraid of what other people think or say. When others question you, you always quietly and consistently answer all doubts with actions and results. After you’ve gone a long way, looking back, the voices offering you “advice” have long been left behind, and you have already walked a beautiful journey.

In the days to come, I wish you can continue to stay true to your original aspirations — you have seen both light and darkness, yet your true self remains. May you be bathed in moonlight whenever you have to walk through the night.
